This is an amazing antique hand-carved yellowish-green serpentine pendant that was decorated in 585 (14k) gold around the middle of the 20th century. The Chinese serpentine itself is from approximately the late Qing Dynasty, maybe older. There is a particular type of Chinese jadestone (Chinese serpentine) that can shapeshift between the two kinds of Western-defined jade (Nephrite & Jadeite.) Yet, it is not considered jade in modern definition despite being the original jade used by the Chinese since the Neolithic period.
The translucent Chinese serpentine is pierced and carved to resemble a butterfly. The hand-carving is accurate and artistically done. The jade has a nice yellowish-green jade color and a filigree gold frame.
The pendant measures approximately 55.04 mm x 21.79 mm x 5.74 mm, weighing 28.4 grams.
In Chinese culture, the butterfly is an auspicious sign of peace and purity, so a serpentine butterfly pendant necklace will bring you not only peace but also good health. Wish someone you know a peaceful life or bring peace into your heart.
This auspicious serpentine amulet is an heirloom-quality, one-of-a-kind antique. It would make the perfect gift for someone special or any admirer of antique Chinese jewelry.
This serpentine pendant has a GIA certificate.
