An exquisite Imperial Russian silver miniature hippopotamus by Fabergé workmaster Julius Rappoport, St. Petersburg, circa 1908.
This charming yet substantial figure is finely cast in solid 84 standard silver and bears clear St. Petersburg hallmarks, including the Greek letter alpha (α), the 84 silver standard, the female head assay mark facing right, and the maker’s mark “I.P.” for Julius Rappoport.
Measuring just 20 mm in length, the figure possesses remarkable presence and weight (17.5 grams), reflecting its solid construction. The model captures the gentle humor and character for which Rappoport’s animal studies are celebrated. Two small ruby cabochon eyes add a subtle yet refined accent.
Rappoport was one of the principal workmasters associated with the House of Fabergé and is particularly renowned for his finely executed silver animal figures produced in St. Petersburg at the turn of the 20th century.
